Description
“In 2009, UNESCO declared Indonesian Batik as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In 2014, Yogyakarta or Yogya was designated by the World Craft Council as the World Batik City. This designation was based on criteria such as historical significance, authenticity, preservation, economy, environmental friendliness, global development, and sustainable progress.
The birth of the Love Batik Movement as an Indonesian Masterpiece (GCBMI) in 2016 was a response by the younger generation to these recognitions. The GCBMI gallery, located at Jl. Tunjung Baru B-8 Baciro Yogyakarta (in collaboration with KaLu and Vanilla), was inaugurated by the wife of the Deputy Governor of DIY, GBRAy A Paku Alam, on May 27, 2016. This movement actively campaigns for the greatness of Indonesian Batik through various events and works, ranging from thematic batik art creation, batik music, to written works on batik issues, including this book.
This book provides an overview of the progress of Indonesian Batik, the greatness of batik itself, the development of Yogya as the World Batik City, and the dynamics of the Love Batik Movement as an Indonesian Masterpiece (GCBMI) from 2016 to 2024. It also presents analytical thoughts on batik. As a learning material, this book encourages further research and studies to advance Indonesian Batik culture.”
